It could be driven fine in the semi auto mode by changing gear with the joy stick. Eventually it was sorted by a Renault truck garage where it appears a faulty glow plug caused the ECU to tell the Gearbox Control Unit to fail to manual operation only. No mention of that possibility in any handbook. So, getting to know the new vehicle, and whilst scrolling through the different pages, came accross the Oil level page (see attached). In the so called improvements made to the series 8, there is no longer a dip stick, so you can no longer physically check the oil, but are now reliant on a gauge, which you have to scroll through pages to get to.

Well it isn't, and so once more I am treading the well-worn path to Customer Services, just to see what they might offer. If I have this unit replaced again, it will be the 5th cluster fitted to a vehicle that is only 4 years old.
